Possums Care & antenatalHealth
Meet Dr Sophie Genoni
Hi, I’m Dr Sophie Genoni. I completed my General Practitioner training in WA and recently moved to Perth from the South-West. I have an interest in women’s health and children’s health and have completed additional training in obstetrics and gynaecology and sexual health.
I am accredited to provide Possums Care (also known as Neuroprotective Developmental Care) and enjoy working with families to navigate through challenges into the postnatal period.
I am an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, and a Professional Member of the Australian Breastfeeding Association.
Possums Care Consultations
Dr Sophie Genoni is welcoming families for Possums Care consultations. Dr Genoni helps families navigate through common challenges in the postnatal period and is accredited to provide Possums Care (also known as Neuroprotective Developmental Care). Dr Sophie provides a holistic approach to management, providing strategies that align with individual parenting values and promote secure attachment. Challenges in early parenthood are often interrelated which is why Dr Sophie thoroughly assesses all these issues in Possums Consultations.
Possums Care consultations can be helpful for the following concerns:

- Infant cry-fuss problems (unsettled, irritable, 'witching hour', 'purple crying')
- Parental well-being or bonding concerns
- Nighttime sleep or nap concerns in toddlers up to 2 years of age

Initial consultations are 1 hour and include thorough assessment, examination, breastfeeding observation and a management plan.
Appointments can be booked online via HotDoc or by calling the clinic and speaking to reception on 08 6186 7992.
Antenatal Care
Breastfeeding Care (Antenatal)
Dr Sophie is passionate about helping prepare mothers for their upcoming breastfeeding journey. It has been shown that women receiving both antenatal and postnatal lactation support have higher rates of breastfeeding initiation and longer duration of breastfeeding.
This appointment type is for those seeking education and support regarding breastfeeding or preparing for common issues in babies (sleep, settling, unsettled behaviour, bonding).
These appointments are suitable for:
- First-time parents
- Parents who have previously experienced issues in breastfeeding or baby care and would like a management plan for this baby.
- Women with medical conditions that may impact breastfeeding (thyroid problems, gestational diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome).
- Women with a history of any breast surgery.
These appointments can also be booked for families who are expecting a baby and are worried about problems with baby sleep or unsettled crying in babies. Dr Sophie can provide education about these issues and a management plan to navigate these once your baby arrives.
This appointment type is NOT for general pregnancy care or antenatal care. If this is what you are seeking, please book a Pregnancy Care appointment.
Pregnancy Care (Antenatal)
Dr Sophie welcomes pregnant women for early antenatal care. She can see pregnant women for their first visit (after finding out you are pregnant) until up to 20 weeks' gestation where your care is handed over to your treating Obstetrician or maternity care provider.
Dr Sophie's antenatal pregnancy care appointments are 30 minutes in length to allow adequate time to ensure all routine care and issues are attended to thoroughly with adequate time for explanation and addressing all your concerns.
A 'New Patient Form' must be completed for prior to the appointment, as well as the 'Antenatal Education and Support Intake form' for breastfeeding appointments.
This appointment type can be made online via HotDoc or over the phone, by calling reception on 08 6186 7992.
Home Visits
We recognise that it can hard for parents to leave the house with their baby, particularly during the early days and weeks.
Dr Sophie Genoni is now available for home visit Possums Consultations (both initial and follow-up appointments). This allows families to relax in their own surroundings while Dr Sophie assists with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding issues, baby sleep concerns, or unsettled crying in babies. All examination, observation and hands-on support can be provided during these home visits.
Distance criteria applies, so we ask you call the clinic on 08 6186 7992 to discuss your eligibility.
Fees (including additional travel costs are applicable) can be discussed with reception, depending on your location.
