Assessment Services

Is your child experiencing challenges or differences with their learning, behaviour, social skills, or development? Do you have questions about your child’s neurotype?

At The Garden Psychology our team of experienced psychologists are here to support.

The Garden Psychology provides assessments to explore: Autism, ADHD, cognitive abilities (including Intellectual Disability), and learning differences (including for specific learning disabilities such as Dyslexia).

Our approach is professional, compassionate, and collaborative. We are committed to working in a way that is neuro-diversity affirming, and continually seek training and lived experience from neurodivergent colleagues’ and families’ that we work with. Throughout our assessments we aim to centre your and your child’s lived experience and individual needs.

Initial Pre-Assessment Session

The initial pre-assessment session is a 50-minute parent(s) or caregiver(s) session. It allows the psychologist to gather information from you as the expert about your child. During this session the psychologist will explore your child’s challenges, strengths, and developmental history, as well as listen any concerns you have, discuss assessment options and associated costs, and answer any questions you may have. It can be a useful session to explore whether further assessment is meaningful for you and your child.

What does an assessment include?

All of our assessments start with a pre-assessment session. Following this, the process looks slightly different depending on your child’s needs and what is being explored. The below flow charts and descriptions give an overview of what the process often looks like. During all assessments the psychologist will consider possible differential and/or co-occurring diagnoses, and these will be discussed in the feedback session.

Cognitive Assessment

Cognitive assessments are designed to identify a child or adolescent’s cognitive strengths and challenges. When combined with comprehensive background information, the results provide valuable insights for developing individualised educational accommodations, interventions and learning plans. The most common cognitive assessment we complete is called the WISC-V.

Educational Assessment

Comprehensive educational assessments assist in identifying intellectual giftedness, learning disabilities (such as dyslexia), and intellectual disabilities. In addition to a cognitive assessment, additional assessments and standardised checklists are included to look at areas such as adaptive functioning (daily living skills), and academic ability.

ADHD Assessment

Our psychologists conduct comprehensive ADHD assessments to gain information about your child’s development and experience of navigating the world around them (including any challenges, strengths, or differences they experience). We are interested in what can be observed by others, and in hearing your child’s perspectives about how experiences are for them. In the assessment process we include the completion of standardised checklists, observation of your child at our clinic and/ or at their school, and interviews with parents, caregivers, and your child. Our interviews incorporate the Young DIVA-5 as well as additional questions.

Please note: Psychologists are not authorised to prescribe medication. If you are considering medication as a treatment option for your child, this requires assessment with a paediatrician or child psychiatrist.

Autism Assessment

Our psychologists conduct comprehensive autism assessments to gain information about your child’s development and experience of navigating the world around them (including any challenges, strengths, or differences they experience). We are interested in what can be observed by others, and in hearing your child’s perspectives about how experiences are for them. In the assessment process we include the completion of standardised checklists, observation of your child at our clinic and/ or at their school, and interviews with parents, caregivers, and your child. Our interviews incorporate the MIGDAS-2 as well as additional questions.
