Speech Pathology at The Garden

We aim to deliver a high quality speech pathology services to infants, children and young people (0-18 years of age) with a range of feeding, drinking and swallowing disorders.

Services Provided

Failure to suckle / latch for breast or bottle feeding

Opinion on Tongue Tie having a functional impact on feeding, swallowing and speech. Increased respiratory distress during feeding.

Faltering growth / failure to thrive

Inability to meet nutritional requirements orally with or without tube dependency.

Coughing, choking, gagging with food or drink.

Poor acceptance with introduction to solids and texture progression.

Refusal to feed / oral aversion

Stressful mealtimes

Refusal of/or difficulty with entire categories of food or textures.

Services Not Provided

Assessment and intervention for developmental speech, language, voice and fluency disorders.

Assessment and intervention of early language development.

School age speech, language and difficulties.

Any disorders / syndromes where there is an existing tertiary service clinic e.g. Cleft palate / lip.

Instrumental feeding assessments: Videofluroscopy.

Speech Pathology Acceptance Criteria

0-18 years with feeding and swallowing difficulties caused by organic and non-organic causes, including but not limited to Paediatric Feeding Disorder, AFRID and co-existing medical conditions (e.g. gastrointestinal, neurological, metabolic) that contribute to psychosocial feeding difficulties and / or physical feeding and swallowing difficulties placing the individual at risk of choking / penetration and aspiration.

Infants with significant difficulties / distress when breast / bottle feeding requiring an oral motor and oral milestone assessment and intervention strategies to rule out dysphagia and / or other impacting conditions e.g. laryngomalacia, tracheomalacia, laryngeal cleft monitoring and intervention.

Infants or children with Failure to Thrive or sub optimal growth, requiring assessment of feeding abilities.

Infants and children with feeding difficulties that require parent education and support to encourage infant / child and parental mental health.

Infants or children that may require assessment of feeding abilities and oral milestones for opinion of establishment of non-oral feeding.

Infants or children with suspected dysphagia (choking and/or aspiration) on liquids and/or solids. This includes infants and children with co-existing medical conditions affecting feeding.

Paediatric feeding, swallowing and mealtime assessment as requested by managing health practitioners for second opinion.

Second Opinions - Referred from external Speech Pathologists. Feeding, drinking and swallowing difficulties seen in a community health centre and where the child is unresponsive to therapy and for which the treating speech pathologist requires a second opinion for ongoing management, that does not require the input of a tertiary service provider. In such cases transfer of care will be provided back to the primary care provider and referred to tertiary service when appropriate.

All referrals to speech pathology are responded to and provided with an alternative service if they do not meet intake criteria.

Meet Irene

Hi I’m Irene, a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist. I started my career working with assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorders. I have over 17yrs experience with feeding and swallowing disorders of infants and children in the hospital setting and the community, with an interest in tongue tie and complex feeding difficulties in infants and children of all ages. I am SOS trained, Beckman Oral Motor trained, Myofunctional Therapy trained and PROMPT trained.

I have 2 children and enjoy cooking and entertaining friends and family. I also enjoy the football, spending time at the beach, drinking good coffee, and being with my family.

60 minute Standard Initial or Review $210 ($110 deposit taken at time of booking)
45 minute Standard Review $150 ($70 deposit taken at time of booking)
30 minute Standard Review $120 ($70 deposit taken at time of booking)
